Every once in a while, an author comes along with a unique voice and vision, and I find myself drawn completely into the universe they’ve created. Day Soldiers is like that for me. Just when you think every angle of the werewolf and vampire genre has been exhausted, someone comes along and completely redefines the genre.
Brandon Hale is a master at creating characters to love and root for. Even the bad guys. Those of you who have read Day Soldiers and met Travis know exactly what I’m talking about. I mean, Travis is an awesome bad guy–mostly because that’s where you’ll see Brandon use his humor to full advantage.
I never actually watched Walking Dead until this year. I’m a hide under the covers type. As a close friend says, “The zombies are just a vehicle for the characters.” The same with those who loved Buffy or Firefly. Many times people will look at the subject matter of a book or movie and shake their head, “No way.” Until they watch the movie or read the book and get knocked off their feet.
Day Soldiers will knock your socks off. It’s just that good.
